How to turn your handwriting into a font on a Mac

Use Penfont, a Mac app that turns your handwriting into a font you can type with in Pages, Keynote, TextEdit, Figma and your other apps. Print its template, write each letter in its box and take a photo, or drop in a photo of a page you have already written. Penfont builds the font on your Mac, and you can install it with one click or export .ttf and .woff files. It runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later and costs $12.99 once, through Polar or the Mac App Store.

Steps

  1. Get Penfont. Buy it once for $12.99, either through Polar (a licence key for up to three Macs) or on the Mac App Store (no key needed). A purchase in one place does not unlock the other.
  2. Write your letters. For the most complete font, print the template and write each letter in its box. Or drop in a photo of pages you have already written, such as notebook pages and letters. It will miss letters your pages never used.
  3. Take a photo and drop it in. Photograph the page and give it to Penfont. The handwriting is read by Apple's on-device Vision framework, so nothing is uploaded.
  4. Fix any letter. Move, resize, clean up or redraw any letter. Letter variants keep repeated letters from looking stamped, and there are Light and Bold weights too.
  5. Install or export the font. Install it on your Mac with one click and type with it in any app, or export .ttf and .woff files to use elsewhere or share.
