Privacy Policy

Ghostless is a Mac app for writing screenplays, with an optional writing coach that reads your scenes and points things out. It never writes any of your script. Ghostless is made by Can Yıldız; the Mac App Store copy is sold by Insania Labs LLC. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it.

The short version

Your scripts stay on your Mac. If you turn on the writing coach, the text of the scenes it reads is sent to be read and is not kept by Ghostless. There are no accounts, no advertising and no tracking, and no analytics except your verdicts on the coach's notes, sent only if you agree.

Your scripts

Ghostless opens and saves the files you choose. It keeps a few things in its own folder on your Mac (~/Library/Containers/com.insanialabs.ghostless, or ~/Library/Containers/com.insanialabs.ghostlessmac for the Mac App Store copy), and none of them leave your Mac:

• Snapshots you save, and the copy it keeps of a script before your first change each day (the last 14 for each script).
• Mood board pictures you add to a script's board, and the board's layout.
• Notes you dismiss and notes you've already seen, kept only as scrambled fingerprints (hashes), not as text from your script.
• The coach's readings of your scenes, as numbers only, so it doesn't read an unchanged scene twice.
• Your answers about the coach's questions (useful or not useful), which only change the order questions appear in.
• Where each script was last seen: its file's place and name, a Finder bookmark to it, and fingerprints of its scene headings, so a script moved while Ghostless was closed gets its notes and board back.
• Your settings.

Changes you plan (Compare ▸ Your Changes) are kept in a small file beside your script, named like it and ending in .ghostless, so they go wherever the script goes. It holds your own sentences, and the text of each scene as it was when you wrote a change for it, so Compare can show what moved. Ghostless keeps a recovery copy of it in its own folder.

The Mac also keeps its usual version history of your files (File ▸ Revert To ▸ Browse All Versions).

The checks for format, spelling and names run on your Mac and send nothing anywhere.

When you drag a picture onto a mood board from a web page, Ghostless downloads it from the address it came from, as your browser would; that website sees the request. Pictures from your Mac are copied, not uploaded anywhere.

The writing coach (only if you turn it on)

The coach is off until you turn it on, in the welcome screen or in Settings ▸ Writing Coach. With it on:

• What is sent, and when: the text of each scene it reads, including dialogue and the names of the characters in it, and for some checks single sentences or lines from the scene. Nothing is sent while you write. It reads when you ask: Coach ▸ Read Scene, Read the Script Now (which first says how many scenes it will read and roughly how long it takes), Read the Opening, or a revision's reread. Turning the coach on asks before reading the whole script; on the free trial it reads only the opening pages. Comparing with an earlier draft sends nothing by itself; Compare's button for the changed scenes sends both versions of each scene you rewrote, to show how each reads before and after. If the coach can't reach a scene (it is busy or offline), it tries that scene again a few times over the next quarter of an hour, and once more when your Mac is back online; after that it waits for you to ask.
• Where it goes: over an encrypted connection to Ghostless's server (hosted by Fly.io in the United States), which passes it on to TypeSafe's Jev, an AI service that reads the scene and answers Ghostless's questions about it. Jev's answers are numbers and choices; nothing it returns is written into your script.
• What Ghostless keeps: nothing of your script. Ghostless's server does not store or log the text it passes on. Fly.io, which hosts the server, handles the network traffic and may keep ordinary connection records such as IP addresses and times.
• What TypeSafe keeps: TypeSafe's privacy policy says it will not train or fine-tune any AI or machine-learning models on what it is sent, and will not pass it to anyone other than its own service providers. TypeSafe does not publish a fixed deletion time: it keeps data for as long as is reasonably necessary to provide the service. That is their policy as of September 19, 2026; the current one is at typesafe.ai/legal/privacy-policy.

What you think of its notes (only if you agree). You can mark any note Helpful or Not Right. The first time you do, Ghostless asks whether to share these. If you agree, it sends the kind of note (for example “a line that says the feeling outright”), how sure the coach was, what you said, and the app's version: never your script, or the note's words. The server keeps them with the day they arrived and the coach's version, and nothing about you, your purchase, your address or the time, so they can't be tied to you. They show us which notes the coach gets right. Turn it off in Settings ▸ Writing Coach; what you mark then stays on your Mac.

Some explanations (“Why?”, “Why this line?”, “Show me where”) come from Apple Intelligence's on-device model when your Mac has it. They are made on your Mac and nothing is sent for them.

With the coach on, the app also asks Ghostless's server, at most once an hour, for the current settings of the coach's notes. That request carries nothing from your scripts.

Turning the coach off stops everything above at once.

Checking your purchase

The coach runs on a paid service, so Ghostless's server checks that each copy was bought before it reads anything:

• From the Mac App Store: Ghostless is free there, and the coach is a subscription, monthly or yearly, bought in the app. The app sends the server Apple's signed record of the subscription (a “transaction”: purchase identifiers, the plan, its dates including when it renews, and the App Store country, price and currency, but not your name or Apple Account). The server checks Apple's signature, keeps none of it beyond the purchase identifier it counts reads by (below), and does not store it. Test copies from TestFlight do the same, and unlocking the coach there costs nothing.
• From our website (Polar): you enter the licence key from your receipt. When you activate it, the app tells Polar the key and your Mac's name, so you can see and free your activations. The server checks the key with Polar each time it starts a session and does not store it. The key itself is kept in your Mac's keychain.

To keep one subscription from using more than its share, the server counts reads per subscription for up to a day, in memory only.

If a purchase or subscription is refunded, Apple tells Ghostless's server, which then keeps a scrambled (hashed) form of that purchase's identifier, when the refunded payment was made, and when Apple sent the notice, so the refunded payment no longer unlocks the coach. Nothing else from Apple's notice is kept. A later payment unlocks the coach again, and so does Apple reversing the refund, which is noted beside it. These records are kept with no time limit, so a refunded payment stays refunded.

• Trying the coach before subscribing: without a subscription to show, the app sends the server a random identifier it made for your Mac (not a hardware or advertising identifier), so the server can count the free trial's reads. The server keeps only a scrambled (hashed) form of it and the count, to stop the trial being started over: no name, email or account, and nothing else about you.

Purchases themselves are handled by Apple or by Polar (as merchant of record), under their own privacy policies. Ghostless never sees your payment details.

Your reading and watching (only if you import it)

If you import your Letterboxd or Goodreads export into Your Standards, the titles, ratings and reviews in it are kept in Ghostless's own folder on your Mac. They are not sent anywhere, unless you turn on “Let the coach read my reviews to sort them”: then the text of each review (with its title) is sent once through the Ghostless server to TypeSafe's Jev, the same way scenes are, to say which craft concerns it speaks to, and is not stored there. Remove All, in the Script tab, deletes them.

No accounts, analytics or tracking

Ghostless has no accounts or sign-in. It contains no advertising or tracking code and no analytics beyond what you think of the coach's notes, sent only if you agree (above). It doesn't sell or share information with anyone. The Help menu's links open this website in your browser.

Updates. A copy bought on our website can check this website for new versions: it asks you before checking on its own, and you can check any time with Ghostless ▸ Check for Updates…. The check asks for a list of versions, naming the app and its version, as any download does; an update is downloaded only when you agree. Mac App Store copies are updated by the App Store.

Deleting your data

Delete snapshots in File ▸ Snapshots…. Forget your answers about questions in Settings ▸ Writing Coach. To remove everything Ghostless keeps, quit it, delete the app, and delete its folder at ~/Library/Containers/com.insanialabs.ghostless (com.insanialabs.ghostlessmac for the Mac App Store copy). The only thing Ghostless keeps anywhere else is the .ghostless file beside a script that has planned changes; delete it along with the script, or on its own to forget those changes.

Children

Ghostless is not directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
