Notebook pages read your handwriting better. The red margin line stays out of your letters: a word written close to the margin of lined paper no longer loses its first letter to the line.

Times and prices come out whole. When Penfont reads something like “7.30” in two parts, each part now gets only its own letters, and Penfont asks you before using them.

The last word on a sloping line is kept. A short word at the end of a line that runs uphill or downhill now follows the slant of the rest of the page instead of being dropped.

Capital letters sit on the line more evenly.

A new sample page. File › Try a Sample Page now opens a page filled in with a clean, even hand, so every box is filled and you can see what a complete font looks like before writing your own.

Notebook pages: letters come out cleaner. Each word now keeps only the ink that is its own, so strokes from the line above or below no longer creep in, and words are cut into letters using their full height, so a T keeps its stem. On our set of real notebook photos, letters landing more than a millimetre out of place dropped from about a third to under a quarter, and Penfont finds many more letters on each page.

Marks you type count. In Mark a Word, marks such as ! ? ( ) & = are now taken into your font too, and the yellow box shows what Penfont read.

An alphabet written out on its own? Penfont now says when a page looks like an alphabet rather than writing, and points to the printed template, which has a box for every letter and mark.

The letter list shows Turkish letters (ÇĞİÖŞÜ çğıöşü) in their own row.

New Font Check. Check any font, or the one you are making: what it can write, which languages it covers, and what may go wrong with it. Font › Check This Font (⌘K) or Check Font Files… (⇧⌘K).

Reopening a font shows a small “Opening…” note instead of covering the window while its page is read again.

The printed template’s box letters are bold and easy to read on paper (since 1.0.5).

Penfont from cnyldz.com: without a license, only the License window works. Penfont doesn’t open photos or make, install or export fonts until a key is activated. Bundle codes paste into the License window, and Help › Your License explains it all.

Bought Penfont in a bundle? Paste your bundle code into the License window. Penfont opens a free checkout with the code filled in; finish it with your email, and paste the license key from the receipt to activate. Before, a bundle code was reported as a license key that wasn’t found.

Clearer box letters. The letter printed in the corner of each box is now bold and dark blue, so you can see which character goes where even on a pale or economy print. Before, it was a light grey that could almost vanish on paper.

Readable instructions. The line of instructions at the top of the template is printed darker too.

Scanning works exactly as before, on colour and black-and-white prints. Print a fresh one with Print Template… (⌘P) to get the new look; pages you have already printed still work.

Fits any window. At the smallest window size the Pages screen used to run past the window’s edge, cutting off buttons, letters and text. Now the controls, the letter list and the footer rearrange to fit, whatever the window and sidebar sizes.

Zooming goes where you are looking. Pinch, ⌘-scroll or the zoom buttons now zoom around the pointer (or the middle of the page), smoothly rather than in jumps. Before, every zoom grew the page from its top-left corner.

The word you are asked about stays put. While “What does this word say?” is open, zooming keeps that word where it is, and its question stays beside it with the arrow on the word.

Move around a zoomed page by scrolling with two fingers or dragging it. Thin bars show which part of the page is on screen.

Going on to the next word with Return scrolls it into view, with room for its question.

Pages you’ve written: real-world photos work better: pages photographed sideways or upside down now work, and print in the background, like dates stamped on boxes behind a shopping list, is no longer taken for your writing.

Typing a word for a page you’ve written now only adds that word’s letters; it no longer quietly changes letters from other words on the same line.

Cleaner letters: leftover slivers are no longer used, letters sit on the line about twice as accurately, and a misread number is no longer used.

If the writing in a photo is too small to make good letters, Penfont now says so. A blank photo or a file that isn’t a picture gets a clear message.

A photo with four dark squares in the background is no longer mistaken for the template.

Windowcase now asks for a licence key the first time you open it. The key is in your Polar receipt email and in Polar’s customer portal, and it works on up to 3 Macs.

If you were already running an earlier version on this Mac, it keeps working without a key.

Activating a key contacts Polar, and Windowcase re-checks it about once a week. That is the only thing it sends anywhere; being offline never locks you out.

The Buy button in the app works again. If you were trying Penfont without a licence between 20 and 21 September, it led to a page that no longer existed: the checkout link behind it was deleted when Penfont was briefly taken off sale, and the address was fixed inside the app, so only a new version could repair it. Updating fixes it.

Buy now goes through cnyldz.com, so a link that changes on the shop’s side can be fixed for everyone straight away, without waiting for an update.

Nothing else has changed since 1.0.1.

Pages you’ve written are read better: it no longer takes obscure dictionary words on trust, so misreadings stop stealing ink from the right letters.

Full stops and exclamation marks come out the right size, instead of a leftover sliver of ink being kept as punctuation.

Pages are read at a higher resolution, so a couple more of your letters survive from each one.

A badly photographed template is no longer silently treated as ordinary handwriting: Penfont asks first, and pages you dropped alongside it are kept.
